This blog chronicles my adventures in Nairobi, Kenya this summer (2010). I am in Kenya with 14 other students from the University of Washington (UW). We are conducting internships at various human rights organizations in Kenya. My internship is at the Kenya Human Rights Commission. This blog is dedicated to Jennifer Caldwell, a passionate human rights advocate from the UW who passed away this past fall in South Africa. Jen is a great inspiration to me!

Elephant Orphanage and Giraffe Center
Last weekend, we visited an elephant orphanage and then a giraffe center. The animals were amazing to see in person! As you can see, we were able to feed the giraffes.
The baby elephants were too much - see video below of them drinking water with their cute little trunks. The warthogs you can see were more than a little grumpy. At one point, the baby elephants had to chase them out of their territory, and they were quite put out about it.

Mariah,
ReplyDeleteLOVED LOVED seeing the photos of you... it's almost as though I'm there with you, I know that expression of surprise & delight so well (when the giraffe nuzzled closer). Yes, the baby elephants are something else. But I must say that self-satisfied little giraffe wins my heart. The art on your previous post is just stunning. Well, your talent, indomitable spirit, and can-do adventurousness keep on keeping on! Lots of love. I went on the best bike ride ever this morning... the air was so fresh and clean and crisp and clear that I just went right to the bike trail instead of to work for just a little pre-work fresh air session. I know it's hardly the same, but we have lots of baby ducks on the lake; there was a stately pelican... and I nearly drove off the trail as I watched an eagle circle above so close I could see its feathers. (Seriously, I hit the grass but recovered- and even stayed upright.)
